The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) is the largest
professional medical specialty organization representing allergists, clinical
immunologists, allied health professionals, and other physicians with a special
interest in allergy. It was established in 1943 with the merger of the American
Association for the Study of Allergy and the Association for the Study of Asthma
and Allied Conditions. In 1948, the Executive Office for the Academy was
established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At that time, membership totaled 528. Today,
AAAAI membership totals more than 6,000.
The mission of the Academy is the advancement of the knowledge and practice of
allergy, asthma and immunology
by discussion at meetings,
by fostering
the education of students and the public,
by encouraging union and cooperation among those engaged in the field,
and by promoting and stimulating research and study in allergy, asthma and immunology
American Thoracic Society

The American Thoracic Society, founded in 1905, is an independently
incorporated, international, educational and scientific society which focuses on
respiratory and critical care medicine. Today, the Society has approximately
13,500 members, 25 percent of whom are from outside the United States. The
Society's members help prevent and fight respiratory disease around the globe
through research, education, patient care, and advocacy. The Society's
long-range goal is to decrease morbidity and mortality from respiratory
disorders and life-threatening acute illnesses.
Association for Chemoreception Sciences

The Association for Chemoreception Sciences (AChemS) was formed in 1978 in
response to urging by funding agencies to integrate the diverse groups of
investigators interested in basic and clinical research on taste and smell. The
Association was established (a) to advance the understanding of chemosensory
mechanisms by bringing to one forum the variety of different scientific
disciplines currently being used to approach the chemical senses; (b) to
encourage basic, clinical, and applied research in the chemical senses; (c) to
promote an appreciation, beyond the chemosensory community itself, of the need
and impact of chemosensory research; (d) to act as an identifiable organ
representing the interests of the chemosensory research community; and (e) to
act as an identifiable directory for those requiring particular types of
chemosensory expertise. The Association holds an annual spring meeting in
Sarasota, Florida and sponsors the journal, Chemical Senses, published
bi-monthly by Oxford University Press
European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI)

The European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) has,
since its' beginning in 1956, worked to promote basic and clinical research by
collecting, assessing and disseminating scientific information.
EAACI is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the advancement of
education in allergy and clinical immunology. Today EAACI has more than 2500
active members and works closely with 38 National Societies.
Swedish Foundation for Health Care Sciences and Allergy

The Swedish Foundation for Health Care Sciences and Allergy Research, the Vårdal
foundation, was established in 1994 following a decision in the Swedish
Parliament. At its establishment a capital of 529 million SEK was transferred to
the foundation. In Autumn of 1999, the market value of the foundation’s
capital was 780 million SEK. During 1999, the foundation disbursed 75 million
SEK to different research projects. The annual support the next five years will
tangent this amount.
The foundation’s purpose is to support research and the education of graduate
students in the areas of health care and allergy. Support is granted for both
basic and applied research.
World Allergy Organization

The World Allergy Organization—IAACI (WAO) is an international
organization whose direct members are 54 national allergy and clinical
immunology societies and 4 regional organizations from around the world. The
38,000 individual members of the national and regional organizations affiliated
with the WAO are members through this connection.
The organization was founded in 1951 and has successfully organized 17 major
congresses, on a triennial basis. WAO also sponsors scientific symposia in
developing areas throughout the world and jointly sponsors postgraduate programs
on allergy and clinical immunology during professional, non-allergy association
congresses.
WAO is expanding its purview in a direct effort to bring together the member
allergists and clinical immunologists who are engaged in research and/or
practice throughout the world. The organization provides advice and active
support to member societies with the mission of building a global alliance of
allergy societies which will advance excellence in clinical care, research,
education and training in allergy.
WAO is a member of the Council for International Organizations of Medical
Science (CIOMS) and has a working relationship with the World Health
Organization (WHO). WAO is also an associate member of the International Union
of Immunological Societies (IUIS).
